The Benefits of Organic Shampoo

If you are suffering from hair loss or have dull, damaged or dry hair, perhaps you should consider trying organic shampoos and conditioners.

Organic shampoo does not have the harsh chemicals that the drugstore brands do we usually buy. Although they can be a bit more expensive, the amount is marginal compared to the advantages it can bring to your hair.

Traditional store bought shampoos usually contain synthetic ingredients. What we mean by this is they contain harsh chemicals that can be damaging to your hair and even more so, you. What we put on our hair is absorbed into our bodies, so it is important to read the labels and understand what these ingredients are. Manufacturers are concerned with making money, so chemicals are added to make them smell good, give them color and more. Some of the ones that should be avoided are:

Propylene Glycol

This is a moisturer added to shampoo. It is actually a skin irritant and has been linked to a risk of developing respiratory and immune disorders in children.

Ammonium Chloride

This can be very harmful if swallowed or inhaled and can also cause serious eye irritation.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone

This is a preserative and there has been evidence that it can harm the skin and also contribute to immune system problems. The United States has restricted it's use in alot of cosmetics, but it is still found in many shampoos. If you would like to see a list of shampoos containing methylchloroisothiazolinone, you can view EWG's Cosmetic Database. You might be surprised.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

This chemical is found in almost every brand of shampoo and body wash. This chemical is associated with probable carcinogens. It is the major component of the detergent part of the shampoo.

Formaldehyde

Many of our shampoos contain formaldehyde! This is not an actual added ingredient, but is something that forms and releases over time. Manufacturers know this, but are not required to put it on their labels. Even some of our baby shampoos contain formaldehyde. Pretty disturbing, isn't it?

When you use an organic shampoo, you are avoiding these chemicals. Organic shampoo contains natural ingredients such as tea tree oil which prevents scalp irritation. Another ingredient you will find in organic shampoo is beta glucan which helps to soothe inflamed cells on your scalp. Because of the natural minerals, herbs and oils found in organic shampoo, your hair will become noticeably healthier. Some of the natural ingredients that stimulate hair growth is aloe vera and coconut oil and is found in many organic shampoos.

You may however notice that when using an organic shampoo that it does not lather up as other chemical laden shampoos do. This is because organic shampoo does not contain sodium laureth sulfate. In the long run, if you are concerned about the health of your hair and what you could be absorbing through your scalp, you may want to consider trying an organic shampoo.
