How to Properly Take Care of Your Hair

Your hair is made of protein called keratin. How well your hair grows or how healthy it is depends on what you eat and how well you take care of it. Here are some tips on keeping your hair healthy and looking beautiful.


Using a good shampoo is a great way to start. Most shampoos contain sulfates or parabens. These two ingredients are widely used by manufacturers and used as preservatives and to make your shampoo lather up. Neither of these are healthy for you. Try not to wash your hair everyday - at most, try to stick to washing every other day or less. Washing too much can strip your hair of it's natural oils.

Condition Your Hair

You should try to condition your hair at least everytime you wash it and if you can deep condition at least once a week, this is also good. Your conditioner should be the right kind for your type of hair. If you have fine hair, you can try oil treatments before you shampoo. For medium to thick hair, use a conditioner that has natural hydrators. Conditioner should stay on your hair for at least two to three minutes before rinsing off. And when you rinse your hair, use cool or lukewarm water. Why? Because the cooler temperature will constrict the cuticle layer of your hair, making it smoother and more reflective.

One word of caution here on conditioners - try to stay away from using products with alot of protein. Since your hair is already made of protein, conditioning with too much protein can make your hair brittle and break off. Find a conditioner that has a good balance of ingredients.

Brushing Your Hair

Many women today still believe that it's healthy to brush your hair at least 100 brushes a day. The truth is that most women with beautiful hair prefer not to use brushes. They use a comb to detangle their hair right after shampooing and then let their hair air dry. Constantly brushing your hair, and especially with a brush can pull hair out of your scalp and cause split ends.

Drying Your Hair

After shampooing, you should pat and squeeze your hair dry with a towel. Do NOT rub. Rubbing your hair can weaken your hair causing it to fall out easier. It can also cause it to become dull. The best way to dry your hair is to let it dry naturally. If you must blow dry your hair, you should use it on the lowest heat setting and try not to blow dry more than once or twice a week. Sleeping with wet hair is also not recommended as it can weaken your hair. Make sure your hair is dry before going to bed.

Trim Your Hair

As soon as you see split ends, you should trim these off. If you keep up on trimming your split ends every month, this will prevent the split end from running up your hair shaft and ruining your hair. You don't need to go to a stylist every month. You can do this yourself or have a friend trim it for you.

Dying Your Hair

Dying your hair too often can cause your hair to suffer because of all the chemicals in dyes. Try to keep this to a minimum or not at all.

Styling Your Hair

Healthy hair does not respond well to heat, so by using curling irons on a constant basis, you risk damaging your hair. Tight hair dos and constant pulling and stretching can also cause damage to your hair.

Eat and Drink Healthy

In my opinion, this is one of the best things you can do for your hair. You should be eating a balanced diet and taking vitamins so that not only your hair gets all the nourishment it needs, but your body as well. Drinking lots of water is an excellent way to keep your hair, nails and skin healthy. 75% of our population is dehydrated and doesn't even know it. You can take all the hair vitamins and hair growth supplements you want, but if you are dehydrated, the cells which cause hair growth will be stunted and your hair will become unhealthy. Women should drink at least two liters of water a day.


It's amazing how much damage stress in our lives can cause to our bodies. Stress CAN cause hair loss, so finding ways to relieve stress should be important.
